Juan Gris was born 23rd of March 1887.

A Spanish illustrator and painter was among the leaders of the Cubist movement in the early 20th century.

He build upon the foundations of early cubism and steered the movement in new directions.

Juan Gris was influenced by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque where in his paintings his aim was to please the eye. As the artist himself put it, 'I prefer the emotion that corrects the rule'.

"Cubism is not a manner but an aesthetic, and even a state of mind; it is therefore inevitably connected with every manifestation of contemporary thought. It is possible to invent a technique or a manner independently, but one cannot invent the whole complexity of a state of mind."

He was among the visionaries who created pathways among the arts. His costumes for the Ballet Russes show his commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, an idea that gathered momentum and became central to contemporary art.

He died May 11, 1927 at the age of 40.
